2. Open your company file if required.

3. Press **F2** on your keyboard.

Knowing your current release helps you determine whether an update is available.

If you prefer to control when updates are downloaded, you can perform a manual update.

### Step 1: Open QuickBooks

Start QuickBooks Desktop and make sure the application is running normally.

### Step 2: Open the Update Window

Select:

**Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop**

### Step 3: Select Update Now

Go to the **Update Now** tab.

Depending on your version, you may see options related to resetting the update or selecting specific update types.

### Step 4: Download the Update

Select **Get Updates** and allow QuickBooks to download the available files.

The download time depends on the size of the update and your internet connection.

### Step 5: Restart QuickBooks

After the download is complete, close and reopen QuickBooks.

If QuickBooks asks whether you want to install the update, follow the on-screen instructions.

## How to Turn On Automatic QuickBooks Updates

## How to Update QuickBooks Desktop From the Installation Files

If QuickBooks cannot update normally from inside the application, you may need to use an update or installation package appropriate for your QuickBooks version.

Before doing this, identify:

* Your QuickBooks product version

* Your QuickBooks year

* Your current release

* Your Windows version

Use the appropriate update source for your specific QuickBooks Desktop edition.

Avoid installing files intended for a different QuickBooks product or year.

## What to Do Before Updating QuickBooks Desktop

A little preparation can prevent unnecessary problems.

### Create a Company File Backup

Before making major software changes, create a backup of your QuickBooks company file.

This gives you an additional recovery option if something unexpected happens during maintenance.

### Close Unnecessary Programs

Close applications that are not needed while updating QuickBooks.

This can free system resources and reduce potential software conflicts.

### Check Your Internet Connection

A stable connection is important when downloading an update.

If your internet connection repeatedly disconnects, resolve the connectivity issue before starting the update.

### Check Available Disk Space

Make sure your computer has enough free storage for the update and temporary installation files.

## What If QuickBooks Desktop Won't Update?

If the update fails, try these troubleshooting steps.

### 1. Restart QuickBooks

Close QuickBooks completely and reopen it. Then try the update again.

### 2. Restart Windows

A Windows restart can clear temporary processes that may interfere with the update.

### 3. Run QuickBooks as Administrator

Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop shortcut and select **Run as administrator**.

Then try checking for updates again.

### 4. Check Your Internet Connection

Confirm that your browser can access websites normally. If the connection is unstable, restart your router or switch to a more reliable network.

### 5. Reset the QuickBooks Update

Open the QuickBooks update window and use the available option to reset the update if appropriate.

Then select **Get Updates** again.

### 6. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings

Security software can sometimes interfere with QuickBooks update processes.

Review your firewall and antivirus settings and make sure QuickBooks is permitted to communicate through the network when appropriate.

Do not permanently disable security protection simply to install an update.

### 7. Use QuickBooks Tool Hub

If normal updating continues to fail, QuickBooks Tool Hub may help troubleshoot certain program and installation problems.

Use the appropriate troubleshooting utility for the type of issue you are experiencing.

## What If QuickBooks Gets Stuck While Updating?

If the update appears to stop progressing, avoid repeatedly starting the update process.

First:

1. Wait to see whether the process resumes.

2. Check whether QuickBooks is responding.

3. Verify your internet connection.

4. Close QuickBooks if it becomes completely unresponsive.

5. Restart Windows.

6. Open QuickBooks again.

7. Retry the update.

If the update repeatedly stops at the same stage, investigate installation, permissions, security software, and network settings.

## How to Confirm QuickBooks Desktop Was Updated

After installing an update, you can check the product information again.

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

2. Press **F2**.

3. Review the **Product Information** window.

4. Check the release number.

5. Compare it with the available release for your QuickBooks version.

If the release information has changed after the update, the update was applied.

## Does Updating QuickBooks Change My Company File?

QuickBooks updates and company-file upgrades are not necessarily the same thing.

A program update may update the QuickBooks Desktop application itself without requiring you to create a new company file.

However, certain version changes can involve company-file compatibility considerations. Before making major changes, keep a current backup of your company file and confirm compatibility with your QuickBooks version.

## How Often Should You Update QuickBooks Desktop?

There is no need to repeatedly install the same update. Instead, check periodically for new releases and install applicable updates for your version.

If you use features that depend on current software information, such as payroll or connected services, keeping QuickBooks current becomes particularly important.
